Driving Licence Renewal
You may renew a Driving Licence if your current licence is nearing its expiry date.

Rules IconLICENCE RENEWAL RULES:
  • Your licence may be renewed 3 months before the expiry date.
  • Failing to renew your licence before the expiry date may result in additional fees to be paid.
  • Failing to renew your licence within 12 months after the expiry date will result in a theoretical aptitude test to be completed and passed before your licence can be renewed.

  • Traffic Register Card - received when you enrol on MalTIS
  • A Malawian driving licence.
  • A completed Driving Licence Renewal Application form.
  • A valid eye-test is required. This may be conducted at the DRTSS office or should you wish to visit your Optometrist instead, please let him/her complete a Vision Certificate which will be captured by the DRTSS Staff administering the eye test.
  • If you are disabled or over the age of 65, please bring along a Medical Certificate completed by a Medical Practitioner, clearing you to drive.
Process IconAPPLICATION PROCESS
  1. To avoid filling in forms in the queue, download and print the Driving Licence Renewal Application form now and complete it before you arrive at the DRTSS office.
  2. Visit your nearest DRTSS office.
  3. Go to the Eye Test Station to undergo an Eye Test.
    • If you have already completed and passed an Eye Test at the DRTSS office within the past 6 (SIX) months, you will not be required to complete another Eye Test.
    • If you have undergone an eye examination at an Optometrist you are not required to complete an Eye Test at the DRTSS. Note that an Vision Certificate must be submitted as proof of the examination.
  4. Submit your application at the Person Application counter.
  5. A deposit slip will be printed which will indicate the amount to be paid at the bank. No money is to be paid at the DRTSS office.
  6. Please verify that the deposit slip is correct and reflects your details as well as an accurate description of the transaction you wish to complete before making the required payment at NBS Bank.
  7. Once payment is made, you may return to the DRTSS office with the stamped deposit slip, to collect your new Driving licence card.

  1. Once payment is made you may return to the DRTSS with the stamped deposit slip.
  2. Go the Aptitude Examination Room where an examiner will schedule your Aptitude Test.

  • The paid and stamped deposit slip received when the application was made.
Process IconTEST PROCESS
  1. Go to the Aptitude Examination Room at the DRTSS office where you have scheduled your aptitude test at. You should arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled test time.
  2. If all is in order, complete your aptitude test. Note that the test is computer based and the answers are selected using a touchscreen.
  3. If you pass the test a deposit slip will be printed which indicates the amount to be paid at the bank. No money is to be paid at the DRTSS office.
    • Please verify that the deposit slip is correct and reflects your details as well as an accurate description of the transaction you wish to complete before making the required payment at NBS Bank.
  4. Once payment is made, you may return to the DRTSS office with the stamped deposit slip to collect your Driving Licence.
Note IconNOTE – The Driving Licence is valid for 5 (FIVE) years unless you are over the age of 65 whereas it is only valid for 1 (one) year.
Note IconNOTE – Applicants that fail the late renewal aptitude test, will NOT have their Driving Licence renewed. You may however reapply following the same process.
